WHO WE ARE
50 years ago Berwick upon Tweed had a large Youth Symphony Orchestra. Today, you would find it difficult to form a quartet. Non-pop genre music in Berwick is in a terminal condition. As cuts in music education take their toll the potential of anything other than large cities to support concert bands and orchestras is diminishing. For large ensembles to perform players need to be increasingly recruited from across a wide area and rehearsals adapted to suit the needs of players. Northumberland and Borders Concert Band was formed in 2020 by Nick Elwood to effect change.
We are compiling a database of musicians from Edinburgh to Newcastle which will help connect, support, inspire, facilitate and enhance non-pop genre music throughout the area.
We are an ‘occasional’ concert band which means we do not rehearse regularly but come together for specific concerts.
We are building alliances with other musical groups, schools, teachers, and local leaders to combat the demise of our art.
We want musicians to join us. It doesn’t matter whether you are in the wind or string department or if you play percussion or piano.
We are growing and want you to add your fire and passion to ours.
